“Mental . Behaviour . Capacity” by Sophie Cheung

The Corner Shop presents “Mental. Behaviour. Capacity”, a multi-media exhibition by Hong Kong artist, writer, and disability rights advocate Sophie Cheung (張馨儀).

Through installation, video, painting, ordinary objects, and participatory works, Cheung transforms everyday materials, including painkillers, erasers, newspapers, tree branches, and table-tennis paddles, into poetic explorations of memory, identity, and human agency. Suspended between the everyday and the discarded, these materials invite visitors to reflect on the traces we leave behind.

Drawing from her lived experiences and over a decade of advocacy around the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the exhibition examines how legal, medical, and social systems shape the ways individuals are seen and understood. At its core is the legal term "legal capacity": how the law assesses a person's mental state to negate their legal capacity, rendering them incapable of autonomous decision-making.

Recognised as First Runner-up of the Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize in 2018, Sophie Cheung has exhibited widely in Hong Kong and internationally, including at Art Basel Hong Kong, Asia NOW Paris, and exhibitions in London.

Through this exhibition, the artist invites audiences to consider presence, autonomy, and remembrance, and how the traces we leave behind connect us to the world.

《精神．行為．能力》是一個包含公眾參與的多媒介展覽，由香港藝術家、作家及殘疾人權倡議者張馨儀創作。

藝術家將止痛藥、擦膠、報紙、樹枝與乒乓球拍等日常物件轉化為藝術載體——懸置在日常與廢棄之間，邀請觀眾思考痕跡與記憶、平凡事物背後的故事。

展覽以藝術家的親身經歷，及其持續十多年推動《殘疾人權利公約》（CRPD）落實的倡議工作為基礎，核心命題是法律上的「行為能力」：法律如何以精神狀態的評判，否定一個人的法律行為能力，使其成為不能自主決策的人。

張馨儀於2018年獲香港人權藝術獎亞軍，作品曾於 Art Basel Hong Kong、Asia NOW Paris 及倫敦等地展出。

《精神．行為．能力》邀請觀眾思考存在、自主與記憶，以及人如何以痕跡與世界建立連結。
