"WakamonoT: Memories We Carry" by Tulika Ranjan
Date
26 October - 24 November 2024
From October 26 to November 24, 2024, WakamonoT: Memories We Carry by Tulika Ranjan transformed The Corner Shop at Mondrian Hong Kong into an artistic exploration of identity and sustainability. As Redress’ designer-in-residence at the time, Ranjan drew on the ancient craft of oriental knotting, reimagining it through a modern lens to create poignant artworks fashioned from discarded garments collected in Hong Kong.
The term wakamono, meaning "youth" in Japanese, served as the foundation for the exhibit, encapsulating the transformative energy and emotions of formative experiences. Each piece wove the narrative of reflection, renewal, and self-discovery. By modernizing traditional knotting techniques, Ranjan invited viewers to untangle the burdens of the past and embrace their most authentic selves.
Beyond its artistic resonance, the exhibition highlighted Redress' innovative approach to addressing textile waste. A significant portion of the garments used came from their Takeback Programme, which found creative solutions for clothing that could not be reused or resold.
Through WakamonoT, Ranjan reminded viewers of the power in pausing, reflecting, and rewriting personal narratives. Each knot in her work symbolized liberation and the rediscovery of purpose, carrying forward a message of resilience, sustainability, and the spirit of youth.
